The Hangout Malaysia

Born in London, Growing in Malaysia
World’s first startup space located inside a research laboratory

The Hangout program is a startup acceleration program by City University London and located inside The Imagineering Institute. It is incorporated within the institute, thereby being the world’s first startup entrepreneur space located inside a research laboratory. Entrepreneurs will have full access to highly advanced lab tools and machines for prototyping with an emphasis on creating a constructive symbiosis with world’s leading academic researchers, mentors, and advisors, who are successful entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. Based across the Johor Straits from Singapore in Iskandar, The Hangout Malaysia provides a program to develop ideas into successful businesses, supported by seed financing, lab research, advanced hardware, humanware (engineers, etc), mentorship, and a creative office community space. Our team is anchored by Adrian David Cheok, a chair Professor of Pervasive Computing at City University in London, who’s expertise in mixed reality, virtual gaming, human-computer interfaces, wearable computers and ubiquitous computing, fuzzy systems, embedded systems and power electronics, represents the chief focus of our accelerator.

Video of the week from Fred Wilson at AVC: Yancey Strickler from Kickstarter gives an extraordinary talk how we can create business in a way that reverses the growing gap between the rich and the poor, while creating better sustainable city economics. As we develop and define the utopian theses of Iskandar we are at a unique point in that we can still "define what it means to be a company from Iskandar" and create our own "schools of thought that can change the world".
